  • 2016's Supposed 'Photo of the Year' Is a Big Fat Fake

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water ... it totally was.

While certainly dramatic, an image of a breaching great white shark currently making the rounds on Twitter as National Geographic’s “Photo of the Year” has nothing to do with the magazine. In fact, it isn’t even a photo.

Woah!! Photograph of the year 2016 by Bob Burton - Chief photographer of National Geographic / @NatGeo pic.twitter.com/ks5lqJwrde

In reality, the picture is taken from a series of computer generated stock images by Russian illustrator “Alexyz3d,” a fact that becomes obvious when the render is enlarged

  • Google's New Trusted Contacts Shares Your Location with Loved Ones In Real Time

Google’s new “Trusted Contacts” app and service makes sure your loved ones always know where you are or can find out where you are if there’s an emergency. It’s opt-in from both sides, only shares in real-time when you want it to, and can put an end to “where are you, are you okay?” texts when someone’s late home or to a meeting.

    Download Trusted Contacts

Trusted Contacts is a personal safety app that opens a direct line of sharing between you and your loved ones.

    • Add your closest friends and family as trusted contacts
    • Allow trusted contacts to request your location. If everything’s fine, you can deny the request, but if you’re unable to respond your location is shared automatically (works even if you’re offline or your phone is out of battery)
    • Proactively share your location if you feel unsafe or find yourself in an emergency
    • Your trusted contacts can see your phone’s activity status to quickly know you’re OK
Whether you’re online or offline, in an emergency or just need reassurance
The feature launches today, and once installed, you can assign “trusted” status to one or as many of your contacts as you like. Once you do, that person can add you back to share their location with you as well, or to request your location at any time. Then, if they request your location, you have the option to share it or decline, but if you do nothing, your location is automatically shared with them after five minutes

The app also allows you to broadcast your location to a trusted contact, or receive location updates from a trusted contact, in real time. When you share, they’ll get a notification that you’re sharing your location with them, and vice versa.

Tap it to fire up Google Maps on your phone and watch their dot move around the map. So if you’re headed home from work and you want your spouse at home to be able to see where you are, you can share it with them and they can watch in real time as you make your way home. (Which, ideally, can eliminate those “can you pick up milk from the store” messages after you’ve already passed the store.) Real-time sharing only works when you want it to. You can share your location in real time whenever you want, and then turn it back off and stop sharing it whenever you want.

  • What Is the Difference Between 32-bit & 64-bit Windows?

How Is the Number of Bits Determined?

Whether your computer architecture is 32-bit or 64-bit depends on the processor (also called the central processing unit, or CPU) inside your computer. Currently, the majority of computer processors fall into one of these two categories. 64-bit processors are exponentially more powerful than their 32-bit counterparts, because they can hold and process so much more information.

To understand the magnitude of the differences between the two, you have to understand a bit about counting in binary. Unlike our decimal system, which has ten digits per place, binary only has two — 0 or 1.

Thus, a 32-bit number has 2^32 possible addresses, or 4,294,967,296. Conversely, a 64-bit number’s capacity is 2^64, or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616. Comparing ~4 billion bytes (about 4 gigabytes) to ~18 quintillion bytes (about 18 billion gigabytes) showcases the difference.

Microsoft provides both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, which you can choose between when you download or install it.
    How Windows Differentiates

If you’re using a 64-bit processor, you also need to use a 64-bit version of Windows to take advantage of it. 32-bit versions of Windows work on 64-bit processors, but can’t use the extra power. You can’t install a 64-bit version of Windows on 32-bit processors, but 64-bit Windows is backwards compatible with 32-bi

  • A Woman Is Going to Jail for Using a Fake Facebook Account to Frame Her Ex-lover

We shouldn’t have to tell you this: Don’t use Facebook to frame anybody for a crime.

A woman in Southern California learned this lesson the hard way after she created a phony Facebook profile of her ex-boyfriend to frame him for stalking, kidnapping, and beating her.

Stephani Renae Lawson of Orange County, California, 25, pled guilty to two felonies—one count of false imprisonment and one count of perjury. She was sentenced to one year in prison.

Lawson had been living with her boyfriend (at his grandparent’s house) for ten months prior to the whole ordeal. She was eventually kicked out for beating up her boyfriend, according to the Orange County Register. That’s when the real trouble started.

Shortly after being booted from the home, Lawson created a fake account depicting her ex, and started sending herself aggressive messages. Then, over the course of a four month period, she repeatedly reported him to the police and had him charged with multiple felonies.

She didn’t stop there. Lawson continued to send herself threats for months. When the district attorney’s office conducted a follow-up investigation, they discovered the messages had come from Lawson’s IP address—meaning she was sending the messages to herself.

She’s now serving jail time, plus three years of probation. Charges against her boyfriend for stalking, kidnapping, battery, and making threats were dropped last month.
